Corning, NY – October 6, 2024 The Corning Community College Red Barons hosted Finger Lakes Community College in a pivotal Mid-State Athletic Conference matchup. In front of an enthusiastic crowd at Spencer Hill, the Red Barons cruised to a convincing 4-1 victory, celebrating Sophomore Day in style.
The match kicked off with both teams probing for weaknesses, but it was the Red Barons who struck first. Just 15 minutes left in the first half, sophomore Cherish Maglio found the back of the net, giving Corning a 1-0 lead that they carried into halftime. The goal reflected the hard work and commitment demonstrated by the team throughout the first half.
As the second half commenced, the Red Barons quickly intensified the pressure. Just three minutes in, Isabella Enright, who was eager to make her mark, scored her first goal of the day, extending Corning's lead to 2-0. The momentum seemed to heavily favor the Red Barons, but the Lakers responded eight minutes later, cutting the deficit to 2-1 with a goal of their own.
However, it was not enough to shift the game's momentum. With just 18 minutes remaining in the match, sophomore Megan Eberhard netted her first goal of the season, finding the corner of the goal beautifully to make it 3-1. The pivotal strike reinvigorated the Red Barons, who were eager to seal their victory.
Enright wasn't done yet, as she added an insurance goal to her tally ten minutes later, securing her brace and bringing the final score to 4-1. Her performance, along with those of her teammates, highlighted the teamwork and resilience that Corning has developed throughout the season.
As the celebration of Sophomore Day ends, the Red Barons turn their focus to their next challenge: a matchup against Jamestown Community College scheduled for a week from Monday. With their eyes set on continuing their success, the Red Barons are determined to build on this impressive victory.
