Ernest E. Hoover, Jr. '79
Ernie was a two-year starting guard on the men's basketball team at CCC. He was not only a solid defender, creating numerous steals, but most importantly, he was the floor general setting teammates up for easy buckets. In fact, Hoover still holds the single game record at CCC for assists as he dished 18 against Jefferson Community College. With his basketball success, Ernie earned admirers from the stands, including CCC students and his future wife.
After CCC, Ernie attended Utica College of Syracuse University and played on its men's basketball team. He was named 2nd Team All-State for the Pioneers. Ernie continued playing after Utica in the European Pro Basketball League where he was on the roster for La Sportique in Belgium. He also participated for the Glens Falls touring team with ex-NBA players, including Andre McCarter, Larry Fogle, and Jim Bradley. Additionally, Ernie won a Gold Medal at the 1979 Empire State Games, Men's Basketball Open Division, Central Region.
Ernie has continued to give back to the sport of basketball operating numerous youth summer camps and coaching AAU basketball. He credits the lessons he learned from CCC Coach Wayne Kenner for the foundation of his coaching philosophy. Ernie put in a number of years as a Transportation Officer with the NYS Department of Corrections.
He resides in Saratoga Springs with his wife of 39 years, Nancy. The couple have three sons (Erik, Troy, and Tim), two daughters-in-law (Amy and Liz), and three grandchildren (Ben, Kevin, and Anna).
Kristen M. (Wheaton) Schoonover '03 - Softball & Volleyball
Kristen came to CCC from Corning East High School following a volleyball career that was highlighted with three consecutive trips to the NYS Final Four Tournament. She brought her talents to CCC and was a rare two-sport athlete who not only participated, but excelled in volleyball and softball.
In her freshman season, she was a force on the volleyball court setting school records in kills and digs while leading the team to the Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC), MSAC Championship, and earning MSAC Conference Player of the Year honors. The team captured the (National Junior College Athletic Association) NJCAA Region III Championship and twice participated in the NJCAA National Volleyball Championship Tournament. In the spring, she earned All-MSAC honors, made the All-Region III Team, and was named the NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) All-American on the softball diamond.
Her sophomore season continued to bring success on the volleyball court and softball field. In volleyball, she was named to the All-Conference Team, MSAC Conference Player of the Year for the second year in a row, the NJCAA All-Region Team, and received NJCAA All-American honors. In softball, she again was named to the All-MSAC Team, All-Regional Team, NFCA All-American Team, and NJCAA All-American Team.
Kristen is one of only two players to be named an All-American in two different sports at CCC.
Kristen continued her education at Elmira College where she was a two-year member of the volleyball team, leading the team as an outside hitter. She earned her Master's degree in Reading and Literacy from Walden University.
Kristen resides in Corning with her daughter, Sophie, and teaches fourth grade at Severn Elementary School in the Corning-Painted Post School District.
Cassie A. (Rupp) Sullivan '99 - Softball
Cassie is one of the most decorated softball players in CCC history considering team and individual honors. She led the Red Barons to back-to-back NJCAA Region III Championships and two straight appearances at the NJCAA National Softball Tournament.
Cassie was the winning pitcher for the NJCAA National Championship game as the Red Barons captured their first ever National title. She was named to the All-Region III team and the NJCAA National Tournament All-Tournament team. In her sophomore campaign, she led her squad to a third-place finish and was again named to the All-Region III team and the NJCAA National Tournament All-Tournament team.
Her success on the diamond led to a Softball Division I scholarship to Stony Brook University where she continued her playing career. She was a two-year co-captain and named the 1999 softball MVP. She was appointed to the student-athlete advisory committee where she participated in community service, social, and educational projects.
She received her Bachelor's degree in 2000 and went on to earn a Master's degree in Counseling in 2004 at SUNY Alfred.
Cassie began her career as a middle and high school counselor in Dryden assisting with the softball team. She is currently a school counselor at Campbell-Savona Junior/Senior High School.
She resides in Horseheads with her husband Patrick, and their two children, Brogan Patrick and Hadley Carolynn.
Karl A. Simmons
Karl, a member of the men's basketball team at CCC in 1975, displayed incredible athleticism and was a pure shooter. He was selected to the NJCAA All-Region Team, led the nation in scoring with 37.5 points per game, and was named to the NJCAA All-American Team. Karl set numerous individual records, some of which still stand, including the single season point record with 964 points achieved in 27 games.
Karl transferred and continued playing at Whittier College in Southern California. He was named First Team All-SCIAC and First Team All-District III, Southern California College Player of the Year, as well as Southern California Sports Broadcasting Association Player of the Year. He was selected as Whittier College's Male Athlete of the Year, and he is a member of its Athletics Hall of Fame. Karl earned his Bachelor's degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation.
He resides in Snellville, Georgia, with his wife, Beverly, and is the owner of K-Glass & Mirror.

Heidi (Brooks)Grimins is a two sport NJCAA All-American in both softball and basketball. In addition to still being recognized by many as one of the most outstanding high school softball pitchers in Section V, highlights of Heidi's stellar softball career at CCC include being named to the 1st Team Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) All-Conference Team, 1st Team National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region III, NJCAA Region III Tournament All-Tournament Team, and 1st Team Louisville Slugger National Fastpitch Coaches Assocation (NFCA) All-American. She was awarded the NJCAA Region III Softball Player of the Year, Region III Tournament Most Valuable Player and Pitcher, and was named to the National Tournament All-Tournament Team. In 2004, she led the Nation in ERA with a 0.67. During her CCC basketball career, she was named to the Tarantelli Classic All-Tournament Team, Adirondack Tournament All-Tournament Team, Erie Tournament All-Tournament Team, 1st Team MSAC All-Conference Team, 1st Team NJCAA All-Region III, NJCAA Region III Tournament All-Tournament Team. In 2004, she was second in the Nation in scoring average with 22.4 points per game.
Heidi has been honored as the CCC Female Athlete of the Year twice, NJCAA Region III Female Athlete of the Year, SUNY Chancellor's Award for Athletic Excellence, SUNY Chancellor's Award for Academic Excellence, and as an NJCAA Academic All-American. In 2004, she also earned the Betty Jo Graber National Female Athlete of the Year Award, the only Division III athlete to ever win this award. Heidi's CCC softball jersey was retired in 2006. Following her career at CCC, she attended Alfred University and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Accounting, while playing softball. Heidi continues to remain active in the CCC Softball team by regularly attending athletics events and speaking to female athletes as a role model.
Donna Dayton played both basketball and volleyball during her time at Corning Community College. Donna was the lead scorer on the CCC women's basketball team from 1974-1976. She was named to the All-Tournament Team and MVP of the 1976 Elmira College Invitational Basketball Tournament, as well as the 1976 All-Tournament Team at the 1st New York State Basketball Championships for Junior College Women. As a lead setter/hitter on the volleyball court, Donna led the team to a 13-1 record her freshman year and a 16-1 record her sophomore year.
Donna received a basketball and volleyball scholarship to St. John Fisher, and after graduation, she joined the Air Force where she played basketball and softball for the Air Force teams. She was named to the All-American Team at the 1985 Amateur Softball Association National Championship. Donna has been honored with inductions into the Elmira Sports Hall of Fame, Cinderella Softball Hall of Fame, and Horseheads High School Hall of Fame. Since taking up golf in 1999, Donna has excelled in this as well, winning the National Postal Association Golf Tournament in 2003 and the 2004 Florida State Postal Golf Tournament.
Timothy Havens played lacrosse at CCC under Coach Ed Michael and Coach Tucker Rochester. During his time at CCC, Timothy was selected to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region Teams and was honored as a National Junior College Lacrosse All-American. Timothy's talents on the lacrosse field led to the 1970 team being one of four chosen to play in the NJCAA's inaugural National Men's Lacrosse Championship held in Long Island, NY.
After two years at CCC, Timothy took his lacrosse skills to Towson State College in Maryland where he would once again distinguish himself on the playing field by leading Towson in scoring. Tim was a two-time Mason-Dixon All Conference Team selection and was chosen as First Team Little All-American Attackman in 1973. His team played in the semifinals of the NCAA College Division National Lacrosse Championship, and he was a starting attackman for the South in the annual North/South All-Star Lacrosse Game. Playing in the All-Star Game put Timothy amongst the most elite of college lacrosse players of his time.
Timothy Havens continued playing lacrosse beyond college. He was a team member of the prestigious Mount Washington Lacrosse Club in Baltimore, MD and the Miller High Life Lacrosse Club in Syracuse, NY. Drafted in 1973 to play professionally in the National Indoor Box Lacrosse League, he was one of the first U.S. citizens to play in this league when he saw action for the Toronto Tomahawks and later the Boston Bolts. While in Toronto, he earned Third Team All-Defensive Team league honors.
Beverly Beebe has been a force in Red Barons Athletics since 1969 when she joined the college as a Professor of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. She held positions as the Division Chairman (1973-1983), Acting Athletic Director (1977-1978), and Assistant Athletic Director (1983-1992). Beverly is the founding coach for both the men's and women's bowling teams at CCC and was the steward of these programs for over 22 years.
During Beverly's coaching career, she had 12 players named National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Americans, three bowlers qualify for the National Collegiate Singles Championships of American College Union's International, six crowned National Champions, and one player turn professional with the PBA. Four of her teams qualified for the National Collegiate Champions Sectional Roll-Offs; three teams won NJCAA Region III Championships; and two teams were NJCAA National Runners-Up.
Beverly was inducted into the 2001 NJCAA Hall of Fame, Corning-Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame in 1986, and Corning Women's Bowling Association Hall of Fame in 1984. She was awarded the NJCAA Tournament Directors Award in 1981. Beverly has served on the Women's International Bowling Congress, Young American Bowling Association/American Junior Bowling Congress Corning Board, and New York State Women's Bowling Congress Scholarship Committee.
Wayne Kenner, Professor in the Math, Physics, Technology Division and Men's Basketball coach, joined the College in 1968. He had a unique ability to reach out to young men from inner-city circles and offer a life without crime, poverty, and anger by playing basketball at CCC with Coach Kenner at the helm. Wayne is remembered as a marvelous coach, educator, and gentleman. Many of Coach Kenner's former students and athletes have gone on to become successful professionals who share his determination to "pay it forward." The fact that he succeeded in turning at-risk youth into dedicated students and proven athletes resulted in the achievement of the Red Barons' 500th win on November 10, 1998.
In 1992, Wayne was honored as the Mid-State Athletic Conference (MSAC) Coach of the Year, and in 1993 and 1994 his players were named MSAC Player of the Year. Two of Coach Kenner's former athletes have gone on to play professional basketball in Europe. In addition to many winning seasons, Wayne led his 1994-1995 team to victory in the MSAC Championship and National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region III Championship, as well as Runners-Up at the NJCAA National Championship. He was also named Conference, Region, and National Coach of the Year in 1995. Wayne was also honored in 2009 as the CCC main gym floor, where the Red Barons basketball team plays, was officially named Kenner Court.
