Red Barons Earn First Win On The Road

SUNY Corning faced the Broome Hornets on Tuesday, August 29th to kick off their season conference play. The Red Barons started with a strong lead and battled hard, but could not close out the first set ending 20-25. Ultimately Broome finished the match 10-25 and 15-25.

Saturday September 2nd, the Red Barons traveled to Herkimer Community College for their first POD tournament. Corning took charge of the first set 25-18; however Herkimer fought back taking sets 2 and 3, 18-25 and 16-25 respectively. With a battle in the 4th, Corning pushed for a comeback but struggled to close out, ending 21-25. Throughout the match Desire Lavare posted 6 digs, Cady Hill contributed 10 assists, and Riley Sargent and Abby Miller both put up 6 kills. Abby Miller controlled the end line with 22 service points and 9 aces by the conclusion of the match.

In the second match of the day, the Red Barons earned their first win of the season against Mohawk Valley, 25-16, 25-22, and 25-15. Cady Hill posted 15 assists, Riley Sargent led the attacks with 10 kills, followed by Rai Fuller with 8, and Tae Dukes contributing 7. Head Coach Saige Hupman and Assistant Coach Rich Pollock also earn their first collegiate win as a new coaching staff.

Corning ended its first week of competition on a high note in the first of many RIII POD tournaments.The Red Barons currently sit with a 1-2 overall record going into week two of match play; Corning will host their own POD this Saturday September 9th at 11 am in the main gymnasium.
