SUNY Corning Goes 4-0 Over Weekend Play

A big weekend ensued for the Red Barons Volleyball team as they went 4-0, improving to a 7-3 overall record. Corning traveled to Fulton Montgomery Community College this past Saturday where they picked up three more wins. First, Corning battled for a win against Fulton Montgomery CC by scores of 21-25, 25-16, 25-14, and 25-22. Next up was Mohawk Valley CC. The Red Barons swept the Hawks with scores of 25-5, 25-10, and 25-21. To finish out the day, Corning defeated Herkimer College in 5 exciting sets with scores of 25-23, 25-17,15-25, 20-25 and 15-11.

On the day, Shelby Sherman led the offense with 27 kills and 19 aces while defensively she had 9 blocks and 24 digs. For the Red Barons, teammate's Autumn Edwards, Megan Brown, and Emilie Cole each added 25, 24, and 14 kills respectively. Edwards helped herself to 11 blocks, while Cole added 6. Freshman libero, Emily Saltsman, was outstanding defensively for the Barons posting 47 digs and Cole wasn't far behind with 32 digs. Setter, Maddie Gorges recorded 87 assists for her efforts Saturday.   

Sunday, Corning faced off against MSAC conference rival Jefferson Community College. The Red Barons defeated the Cannoneers in 4 sets with scores of 25-22, 25-18, 23-25, 26-24. It was a hard fought battle with many players contributing to the win. Leading the way offensively was freshman hitters, Sherman and Brown, each tallying 10 kills, while Edwards added 8. Defensively, Saltsman kept her team in the match with 22 digs and teammate, Sherman added 14. Gorges finished the day with 30 assists.

Corning travels to Rochester, NY tomorrow for a 6pm game against Monroe Community College.
