Wood Named NJCAA D3 National Player of the Year

To say Alexis Wood had a season to remember is an understatement.  The third baseman from Elmira, New York, was a member of the 2021 SUNY Corning Community College Softball team that won a MSAC Conference Championship, an NJCAA Region III Championship, and finished as NJCAA D3 National Runners-Up.  More impressive were the individual honors she garnered.  Wood was named to the All-MSAC team and NJCAA All-Region III team, she was selected as the MSAC Conference and Region III Player of the Year, she was named NFCA All-American and NJCAA First Team All-American; all leading to her being named the NJCAA Region III Female Athlete of the Year for 2020-'21.  With little room left on her trophy case, Wood received the highest award the NJCAA gives to softball players; she was named the NJCAA D3 National Softball Player of the Year.

"This honor could not have been given to a more deserving player", said CCC Head Coach Stacy Johnson of her player receiving this honor.  "Lexi is the epitome of what every coach dreams of having on their team.  Her statistics were instrumental to our success but what is more impressive, and important, is the kind of person she is.  Lexi posted a 4.0 in the classroom this semester and is one of the most humble, hard-working players I have ever had the privilege of coaching.  Her team always comes before her own needs and she never wants the spotlight on her.  She is a coaches dream and a players player.  This young woman was our leader on and off the field.  I am so proud of what she has accomplished and I am grateful she has received the recognition she deserved."

The Red Barons finished the season 37-3, advancing to the NJCAA D3 National Championship Game.  Wood is the first ever Corning CC player to earn this honor.
