Wood and Johnson Earn MSAC & NJCAA Region III Top Honors

Corning third baseman Lexi Wood and Head Coach Stacy Johnson have been honored by the MSAC Conference and the NJCAA Region III by being named Player of the Year and Coach of the Year.

Wood, has led Corning both offensively and defensively throughout their 34-1 campaign that has seen the Red Barons being named the #1 ranked team in the nation for the last four weeks.  With a .608 batting average and a nation-leading 74 RBI's, Wood has caught the attention of coaches from across the conference and Region III.  The slick fielding third baseman has scored 53 runs, belted 62 hits (14 doubles, 3 triples and 8 homeruns) while maintaining a .938 fielding percentage.  With these honors, Wood becomes only the third player in the Red Barons program to garner Player of the Year honors in the same season as a freshman.  "Lexi has come through for us time and time again in clutch situations", sadi Head Coach Stacy Johnson about Wood's 2021 contributions.  "Lex is a team player who leads by example and is one of the toughest outs I have ever seen in the batters box.  She shows up everyday, works hard and does her job.  She is a coaches dream; always ready to compete and doesn't get rattled.  She is definately worthy of these two honors and I couldn't be happier for her."

Johnson, in her 23rd season at the helm of the Red Barons softball program, was also honored by the MSAC Conference and NJCAA Region III.  This is the 13th time she has been named MSAC COY and 8th time as the NJCAA Region III COY.  Johnson has coached 79 All-Americans, 14 MSAC POY's and 8 NJCAA Region III POY's while compiling an overall record of 593-213 in her career.  This season, the program captured its fourth NJCAA Region III Championship and is headed to the NJCAA National Tournament this week in Syracuse, NY.
