Red Barons Sweep Mohawk Valley

The SUNY Corning Community College softball team hosted Mohawk Valley on Tuesday and came away with a sweep of the Hawks by scores of 6-3 and 7-3. 

In game one, MVCC jumped out to a 2-0 lead and held on to that heading into the bottom of the 4th inning when Danielle Dille drew a walk and Michele DiNicola smashed a two-out two-run homerun to leftcenter field to knot the game.  The Hawks scored a run in the top of the 5th to regain the lead but the Red Barons added 4 more runs in the bottom of the 5th to take the lead for good.  Corning's Laura Tryon started the rally with a lead-off single, followed by hit batter and then a walk to load the bases with one out.  Dille lined a double to the left center gap to plate 2 runs Leigha Jones followed with a 2-run single.  DiNicola was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's while Jones and Dille each collected 2 RBI's.  Pitcher Laura Burrell went the distance allowing 7 hits with 3 strikeouts and 2 earned runs. 

In the nightcap, the Mohawk scored in the bottom of the 2nd to take a one-run lead that was short-lived as CCC qucikly responded in the top of the 3rd as Dille hit a two-out single followed by a Jessica Vidal-DeJesus RBI double.  Entering the top of the 5th it was a 1-1 game but the Baron bats came alive and plated 4 runs.  Haley Maggs reached on a single, Dille singled, Vidal-DeJesus had an RBI single, Jones had a 2 RBI single and DiNicola had a sac fly.  In the bottom of the 6th, Mohawk added 2 runs to close the gap to 5-3 but Corning added some insurance in the top of the 7th.  DiNicola finished game two going 2 for 3 with 1 RBI, Dille was 3 for 4, Vidal-DeJesus was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's and Jones was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's.  Rhilea Chabot threw a gem as she allowed 5 hits, striking out eight and walking one.
