Red Barons Take Two of Three from Genesee CC

The Corning Community College softball team hosted Genesee CC on Tuesday and Wednesday in a three-game series.  Corning managed to win two of the three with GCC earning the win in the middle game.

Game one - GCC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning before Corning's Haley Maggs stepped to the plate and smacked a two out game tying two-run single in the bottom of the 3rd inning.  Corning struck again in the 4th scoring 5 runs in big part to Leigha Jones and Hailey Burdick hitting back to back triples and Maggs plating another run.  Corning added two insurance runs in the 5th as Jess Vidal-DeJesus and Michele DiNicola each had RBI singles.  Jones ended the game 3 for 4 with 3 RBI's, Burdick was 2 for 2 and Maggs was 2 for 3 with 3 RBI's.  Laura Burrell turned in a solid performance on the mound allowing 6 hits and striking out 6 in the 9-3 victory. 

Game two - It was Genesee who had the hot bats in this pairing as the Corning bats fell silent.  Corning scored in inning one on Michele DiNicola sacrafice fly to plate Danielle Dille after her leadoff double to start the game.  Corning would not score again until Jess Vidal-DeJesus hit a solo HR to start the 5th inning.  Vidal was 3 for 3 and Leigha Jones was the only other Red Barons with multiple hits as she went 2 for 3.  GCC scored 4 in the first and never looked back as they earned the 12-2 win.

Game three - Corning was able to find their offensive on-switch in between games as they earned the 18-5 win in the decisive game of the series.  It was a 5-4 ballgame heading into the fourth innning when the Red Barons bats exploded and scored 6 runs to begin to pull away.  Corning smacked 7 hits in the 4th frame, higlighted by a Jones two-run RBI, a DiNicola two-run double and then a Hailey Burdick two-run HR.  Corning would add another 7 runs in the 6th featuring a Vidal two-run double, and a Laura Tryon three-run HR.  Tryon was 3 for 5 with 6RBI's, Maggs 3 for 3, Ryleigh Hancock 2 for 3.  Vidal, Burdick, Jones and DiNicola all had two RBI's.  This outing, Burrell kept the Cougars at bay, allowing 9 hits, with only one for extra bases.
