Softball Sweeps Broome CC

The Corning CC softball team traveled to Broome CC Thursday afternoon and earned a sweep of the Hornets by scores of 9-7 and 10-5.

In game one, Corning held a commanding lead until the 5th inning when the Hornets staged a comeback.  Corning scored 4 runs in the top of the first courtesy of Leigha Jones and Hailey Burdick RBI doubles.  The Red Barons added 3 more runs in the 3rd with a Burdick homerun and then a Michele DiNicola 2-run homerun gave the Barons another 2 runs in the 4th inning and proved to be the game winning runs.  Corning's 9-0 lead disappeared in the 5th as Broome drove in 4 runs and followed with 3 in the 7th before the Barons could seal the win as Laura Burrell struck out the final batter.  Burdick, DiNicola and Jones each went 2 for 4 and accounted for 8 of the 9 RBI's.

In the nightcap, it was Broome that jumped out to the early 2 run lead before Ericka Pierce smacked a 2-run single in the bottom of the 2nd inning to tie the game.  A DiNicola sol homerun put Corning up 3-2 in the 4th inning.  Broome regained the advantage as they scored 3 runs in the 6th but that would be short-lived as Corning responded in the bottom half of the frame with 7 runs of their own.  Laura Tryon started the rally with a solo HR followed 3 batters later, Ryleigh Hancock blasted a three-run HR to take back the lead 8-5.  Three batters later, Burdick would strike for a two-run shot of her own for Corning's 3rd HR of the inning.  Rhilea Chabot earned the win striking out 11 and allowing only one earned run.

Corning will host Genesee CC in a DH on Tuesday; first pitch is at 3pm.
