Skerritt & Copp Named Head Coaches For Cross-Country

Dr. Matthew Skerritt and alum Rebecca Copp have been named Head Coaches for the first season of cross-country at SUNY Corning Community College since 2002.

Dr. Skerritt will coach the men's cross-country team this coming fall after being a Faculty REF for the Men's Soccer team. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Biology for the college with extensive experience in biochemistry, cell and molecular biology, genetics, and anatomy and physiology. He is from the Hudson Valley of New York State, where he graduated from Rondout Valley High School. Matthew attended SUNY Geneseo and completed his undergrad degree in Biochemistry and then he headed to Binghamton University where he earned his Master's in Biochemistry, Cell, and Molecular Biology. After Binghamton, Dr. Skerritt completed his PhD in Biophysics while specializing in cardiac electrophysiology from the University of Buffalo and he conducted postdoctoral training in the Department of Public Health Sciences at the University of Rochester, where he focused on cardiovascular disease prevention. Dr. Matthew Skerritt currently resides in Corning, NY.

Rebecca Copp is back coaching for the Red Barons after leading the Red Barons women's basketball team for six years. Becky is the most decorated and accomplished cross-country runner in the history of Corning CC and now will coach the women's cross-country team this fall. As a runner, Becky was highly decorated and earned each of  the following designations 2 times in her Corning CC career: Cross-Country NJCAA All-American, MSAC Cross-Country Champion, MSAC Runner of the Year, MSAC All-Conference Team, and Region III All-Region team member. After Corning, she earned a scholarship at Felician College (NJ) where she went on to earn a Bachelor's in Biology. Mrs. Copp is also a member of the Corning-Painted Post Sports Hall of Fame, class of 2006. She currently works at the college in the Learning Commons as a Science Learning Specialist. She resides in Corning, NY with her husband Joshua (a former Corning CC cross-country runner) and their two children.
